Salon Tipping, Explained
Salon and spa tipping follows restaurant norms closely: 18-20% is standard for a haircut, color, manicure, pedicure or spa treatment, with 25% for work you're especially happy with. The complications aren't about the percentage. They're about what you take the percentage of, and who else in the room should get a share.

Tip on the full price, not what you paid
This is the question that comes up most, and the answer is consistent across every version of it. If you used a gift card, a Groupon, a first-visit promotion, a loyalty discount or a friends-and-family rate, tip on the full list price of the service, not the discounted amount you handed over.
The reasoning is straightforward: the discount came out of the salon's margin, not the stylist's effort. A $120 color discounted to $70 still took the same two hours and the same product. Tipping 20% of $70 quietly passes the cost of your deal to the person doing the work.
Tip on the pre-tax service total. Retail products you buy on the way out, like shampoo or styling cream, aren't tipped on at all.
When more than one person worked on you
Larger salons split the work. A colorist mixes and applies, an assistant shampoos and rinses, and a stylist cuts and finishes. Each of those people is normally tipped for their part.
Two approaches both work. You can hand each person their own tip directly, which is the clearest and most appreciated option, or you can leave a single larger tip at the desk and tell them how to divide it. What you want to avoid is tipping only the stylist who cut your hair and assuming it filters back. At many salons it doesn't.
The assistant who washes your hair is the one most often forgotten. $2-$5 handed over directly covers it.
Do you tip the owner?
The old rule was that you don't tip a salon owner, on the logic that they take the full price of the service anyway. That convention has largely faded. Most owners today accept tips, many independent stylists renting their own chair are effectively owners, and declining to tip because you assume someone owns the place is more likely to read as a stiffed tip than as etiquette.
Tip the owner as you would anyone else. If they wave it off, that's their call to make, and it's an easy exchange either way.
Cash, card, and unhappy results
Cash and card are both accepted almost everywhere. Cash reaches the stylist that day with nothing deducted; card tips are convenient but may be held until payroll and can carry processing costs at some salons. If you want the tip to land cleanly and immediately, cash is still the better instrument.
If you're genuinely unhappy with the result, the tip is the wrong tool for saying so. Most salons will fix or adjust work within a week or two at no charge, and saying something before you leave gets you a better outcome than an undertip the stylist will never understand. A reduced tip communicates nothing except that you were displeased about something unspecified.
