Delivery Tipping, Explained
Delivery tipping has a quirk that sets it apart from tipping at a restaurant: the driver often sees your tip before deciding whether to take the order. On DoorDash, the offer a driver sees includes any tip you added at checkout. A tip added after delivery isn't part of that offer, so tipping up front can affect how quickly someone picks your order up.

Delivery fees are not tips
Food delivery apps charge delivery fees, service fees and sometimes small-order fees, and those rarely go to your driver. The tip is the part of the checkout you can count on reaching them: DoorDash says Dashers receive 100% of customer tips. For a restaurant's own in-house delivery staff, tip pooling policies vary, so cash is the safer bet when you want it to reach a specific person.
Why small orders need a minimum
A percentage works on a large order and falls apart on a small one. On a $12 lunch, 15% is $1.80, and the driver spent the same time and gas they would on a $60 order. A $3-5 minimum keeps small orders worth picking up.
Weather, distance and heavy orders
Bad weather, a long drive and a heavy order all mean more work for the same base pay, so each is worth a few extra dollars. Cases of water, a stack of pizzas and a third-floor walk-up all count.
Changing the tip later
Most apps let you add to the tip after delivery, which is worth using if the driver went above and beyond: several flights of stairs, no elevator, a hard-to-find address. How long you have depends on the app. DoorDash allows it for up to 30 days, while Uber Eats only lets you change a tip you set at checkout for an hour after the order arrives.
When something goes wrong
Late delivery is rarely the driver's fault. Most delays trace back to the kitchen, and apps sometimes group orders, so a stop on the way may be another customer's food rather than a detour. Save a lower tip for problems the driver clearly caused. Missing or wrong items are the restaurant's mistake, and the app is the place to report them.
