Rideshare Tipping, Explained
Tipping isn't included in an Uber or Lyft fare, though the way the app handles payment can make it feel that way. The tip prompt appears after the ride, and 15-20% is a solid range for a normal trip.

Where your tip goes
Rideshare drivers are paid per trip and cover their own gas and the wear on their car out of what they earn. Tips come on top of that. Uber and Lyft both say drivers keep 100% of tips, and Uber doesn't take a fee from them. A cash tip reaches the driver just as well.
Short rides, waits and luggage
Percentages get thin on short trips. On a $9 ride, 15% comes to $1.35, which is why a lot of riders set a $2-3 minimum instead.
Waiting and extra stops are worth adding for too. A driver who sat outside your building for ten minutes could have been on another trip in that time. If they load heavy bags into the trunk, add a dollar or two per bag, the same as you would for a bellhop.
Airport runs, long trips and tolls
On a long trip or an airport run, percentage tipping scales by itself, since the higher fare produces a bigger tip for the extra time. Tolls are handled separately. Uber adds any tolls to your fare to reimburse the driver, so there's no need to tip extra to cover them. If a large toll is inflating the fare, tip on the amount before it.
Tipping later, and your rating
There's no need to rush the decision. Both Uber and Lyft let you add a tip for up to 30 days after the trip ends, which is handy if you forgot in the moment or realized later that your driver went out of their way.
Tipping doesn't affect your rider rating either. Drivers rate you when the trip ends, and since a tip can be added weeks later, they've usually rated you long before it arrives.
