Bar Tipping, Explained
Bar tipping works two ways, depending on how you're paying. If you settle up drink by drink, the convention is $1-2 per drink. If you run a tab, it's a percentage of the total, usually 15-20%, the same as a restaurant server. The calculator above works on the percentage, so enter your tab total.

Per drink or percentage?
For an ordinary drink the two methods land in about the same place: $1 on a $6 beer is roughly 17%. They drift apart at the extremes. On a $16 cocktail, a single dollar is a thin tip, and on a round of $4 well drinks, 20% comes to less than a dollar a drink. Most people tip per drink while paying as they go and switch to a percentage once they open a tab.
Tipping well on the first round
At a crowded bar, bartenders tend to remember who tipped well on the first round, and it can make the next one arrive faster.
Open bars and drinks on the house
At an open bar, the host has paid for the drinks, and event packages often include a service charge for the staff as well. If gratuity is covered you don't have to tip, though a dollar or two in the tip jar is still appreciated. When in doubt, ask the bartender or the host.
A drink on the house is a different case. The bar gave the drink away, but the bartender still made it, so tip on what it would have cost.
Cash, cards and happy hour
Cash is often preferred at busy bars, where card tips may be pooled or paid out later. Bottle service and large groups can carry an automatic 18-20% gratuity, so check the bill before tipping on top of it.
Happy hour doesn't change the math. The bartender made the same drink, so tip on the regular price or stick to $1-2 per drink.
